About 10 to 15 percent of Americans suffer from irritable bowl syndrome. Lower Gastrointestinal track discomfort is no laughing joke. From abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, constipation and bloating. There are certain foods that can make these symptoms worse, so avoiding can help determine your triggers and bring on some relief.
1) Milk and other foods that contain lactose including cheese and ice cream can be hard to digest and can cause uncomfortable gas and bloating. In fact around 70% of adults around the world do not produce sufficient amount of lactase enzyme that helps break down lactose. Yogurt might be an exception for some due to healthy bacteria assisting in breaking down lactose making it easier to digest.
2) Foods high in Fructose including fruits such as apples,pears and dried fruits and ofcourse all processed foods containing fructose or fructose derived sweetener.
3) Caffeine can increase diarrhea, another major symptom of IBS. Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate and over the counter headache pills such as Excedrin.
4) Sugar Free Sweeteners including sugar alcohol such as xylitol and sorbitol can cause diarrhea. These are found in processed foods and chewing gum.
5) Beans and cruciferous vegetables including broccoli and cabbage have the potential of causing gas and discomfort due to having indigestible fiber that bacteria will feed on causing fermentation and production of more gas.
